SHARING EXPERIENCE TO BENEFIT HEALTH SERVICES

Date:

A new journal is being launched which will publish research findings into mental health and learning disability services, and will help improve services for those who need to use them.

The South West Yorkshire Mental Health NHS Trust and the University of Huddersfield are launching the new journal ‘Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Research and Practice’ at Huddersfield University on November the 2nd at 4pm.

This readable and accessible journal encourages mental health and social care practitioners, researchers, educators and service users and carers to share research, service developments, and educational developments, or to write reviews. Importantly, it particularly welcomes contributions from service users and carers who want to share their perspectives on health care.

Dr Virginia Minogue, Research and Development Manager for the Trust, explained, ‘This has been a very exciting development and one of the real successes from our partnership with the University of Huddersfield. Publishing research findings in an accessible way allows us share with colleagues both locally and nationally evidence that will improve our services for those who use them. The journal is a testament to both organisations commitment to encouraging research and the development of evidence based practice.’

Professor Sue Frost of the University of Huddersfield and Judith Young, Chief Executive of the South West Yorkshire Mental Health NHS Trust have spoken of the ‘fantastic spirit of endeavour’ that had lead to the journal’s publication. They believed it will ‘make a real contribution to our practice locally and inform the wider regional and national community’.

The journal will encourage a wide range of material which is accessible to a broad audience. It will appeal to mental health practitioners, social care practitioners, researchers, educators, users of mental health services, carers, and voluntary sector workers.

Virginia Minogue continued, ‘Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Research and Practice’ aims to be a good quality peer reviewed journal with well presented material. The journal aims to be as inclusive as possible and supportive of first time or novice researchers and writers.’
