Batley nursing assistant retires after 28 years

Staff from the South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust gathered at a special retirement party to say their farewells to a long serving nursing assistant.

Pam Stevenson, 57, from Batley, has dedicated the past 28 years to nursing, including spending the last 16 years caring for people with learning disabilities at Fox View – a respite care unit at Dewsbury and District Hospital. Prior to this Pam worked on the general wards at the Dewsbury and District Hospital and at Oakwell hospital, Birstall.

Pam’s colleagues past and present, along with some of the people she has cared for came to the party, which was held at Fox View.

Pam said, "I’ve enjoyed working in a relaxed and happy atmosphere and helping people enjoy their stay with us at the unit. Seeing people come into the unit so poorly, but then looking so much better after a few days of tender, loving care is very rewarding. I enjoy making nice meals for our clients, knowing that they enjoy home cooking."

Pam continues, "My husband and myself are both retiring and moving house to the coast at Cleveland. I’m looking forward to not working shift work and having plenty of free time to enjoy the seaside. We both said we would move to the coast once we finished work , we’re both looking forward to it so much – our wish has come true!"
