Celebrating success in Barnsley

Date:

The healthy settings service in Barnsley recently held a farewell celebration event to showcase their work and give information on services that can offer health and wellbeing support in the borough.

The healthy settings service helps to develop and support the effective delivery of health promotion interventions for young people. The service offers training and support to those who work with children, young people and their families to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities in Barnsley.

The event, which took place at Milton Hall in Elsecar, was attended by over 60 including the school nursing service, health visiting, dental health and South Yorkshire police amongst others. Throughout the evening, services had the opportunity to network and find out about local support available.

The event was attended by Dave Ramsay, deputy director of operations at the Trust, who spoke about the opportunity the event would offer to settings and the work the healthy settings service had undertaken to improve health outcomes for children and families in the area.

Sue Copeland, healthy settings manager said, “The event was a great opportunity for services in Barnsley to come together and share knowledge. It gave a range of services the chance to promote what they do and how they can help to support others.

“Improving the health and wellbeing of children and families in Barnsley is key and holding an event where people have access to information about support available in once place was great – we had some fantastic feedback from those that attended.”

As part of the healthy settings service work, the team has provided training to partners in many areas including motivational interviewing, sex and relationships, food and nutrition, drugs and alcohol and also supporting families through loss and bereavement. The team has also produced a range of resources including a ‘primary sex and relationships education resource’ for schools which gives advice about sex relationships education. The document, which covers creating a safe learning environment, establishing ground rules and answering children’s questions is available on the Trust’s website.

More information on the services provided by the Trust in Barnsley can be found by visiting the service directory.
