Raising awareness of Dietitians Week

Date:

South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is raising awareness of the Trust’s dedicated team of dietitians during Dietitians week and highlighting the impact that diet can have on health and wellbeing.

Dietitians week takes place between 8-12th June 2015 and the Trust is holding a special event on Wednesday 10th June to showcase to both service users and staff the impact dietitians have on improving nutrition and wellbeing, particularly in mental health.

The event will demonstrate the relationship between food and mood, busting common food myths, providing tips on the best mobile apps to use and invite people to sample fruit smoothies.

Choosing the right person for advice on food and nutrition can sometimes be confusing with many people claiming to be nutrition experts. Dietitians are registered professionals who can support people to improve their nutrition and wellbeing.

Barbara Tootle, the Trust’s advanced dietitian said: “Dietitians week is an opportunity for dietitians in the Trust to demonstrate their impact on health & and wellbeing through nutrition and diet therapy.

“Eating and drinking can become increasingly difficult to maintain if your mood is low or you have memory problems, and your body may in fact lack vital vitamins and minerals. We can help people make healthy food choices become the easiest choice for the long term.

“Evidence shows the food we eat can play a significant part in maintaining mental wellbeing with the ‘Mediterranean’ style diet praised for its benefits for a healthy heart and mental health.”

The Trust’s dietitians were recently nominated for the Trust’s Values into Excellence Awards for their approach to continually put patients at the centre of care. One service user who has been supported by the team said: “Staff have really helped me to get to grips with my eating and I will continue to use these after the sessions have ended.”
