Dementia drop-in sessions on offer at day care centre

Date:

People with dementia and their family members and carers are being invited to a series of supportive drop-in sessions by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

The sessions will be held every Wednesday (starting 9 September) from 10am – 3pm at Roses Day Care Centre, Burntwood Community Centre, Church Top, South Kirkby, WF9 3QS. The sessions are free with a small charge for refreshments.

Family members and carers attending the sessions can expect to receive advice and support from experienced health professionals and representatives from local organisations involved in dementia care, who will be on hand to signpost people to services available in the local area.

Arts and crafts and games such as boccia and curling, along with other activities which can help with improving wellbeing and maintaining memory, will be on offer for people living with dementia.

The care home setting means the venue is safe and suitable for older people and those with mobility issues.

Dave Harrison, health and wellbeing development practitioner at the Trust, said: “The drop-in sessions are a really good way for people living with dementia to keep active – both physically and mentally – while family members and carers can enjoy a small amount of respite.

“The unique selling point of these drop-in sessions is that they are delivered in care homes by care home staff who have the skills and facilities to support anyone attending, regardless of their abilities.

“The support that both family members and carers and those experiencing dementia can receive from the sessions is invaluable, and I would encourage anyone to come along.”

South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust provides community, mental health and learning disability services to the people of Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. The Trust also provides some medium secure (forensic) services to the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber.
