Kirklees police liaison team win another award

Date:
Solving Problems With Partners Award : Helen Riley, Gail Tinker and Christopher Hodge

The Kirklees police liaison team are celebrating winning an award at the West Yorkshire Police awards last week. The team won in the category of solving problems with partners, adding to the district chief superintendent’s commendation they won last May.

This police liaison scheme is run in Kirklees and Calderdale, where mental health practitioners work alongside police officers in the police station, at people’s homes, and at the scene of incidents to reduce mental health detentions. This includes providing assessments with police to determine the least restrictive care option, advising on the use of Section 136 and providing support at the scene.

The scheme has proven successful in reducing the number of people detained in a police cell or under section as the mental health practitioners are involved as the crisis is developing, and are able to formulate a plan of care with the person. This often means that an arrest is no longer necessary and the person is able to access the mental health services they need.

Last year the team, along with the Calderdale police liaison team, were also nominated for a Health Service Journal (HSJ) award and a HSJ Value in Healthcare award.
