Redeveloped mental health wards given new local labels

Date:

The new names of our transformed mental health wards at Fieldhead in Wakefield have been revealed.

Non-secure wards Priory and Trinity will now be known as the Nostell and Stanley wards following an investment of £16m by our Trust.

The site’s psychiatric intensive care unit has also been rebranded as Walton.

The new names follow a tradition of naming units on the Fieldhead site after local places in Wakefield, joining the likes of the Bretton Centre and Chantry unit.

Together the wards will be known as the Unity Centre – a nod towards city centre community venue Unity Works, which hosts courses and events for the Trust’s Wakefield and Five Towns recovery college and charity Creative Minds.

The work to redevelop wards at Fieldhead is part of the Trust’s ongoing commitment to improve services for local residents. Service users will benefit from purpose built state of the art therapeutic areas, en-suite bathrooms and vastly improved patient relaxation areas to help people on their journey to recovery.

Other areas of the development will include modernised visitor areas, an improved reception facility and a better working environment for staff.

Unique new observation windows will also be brought into the wards. The windows, which staff use to look into bedrooms without needing to go inside, will transform into photos of local landmarks such as Chantry Bridge and Nostell Priory at the turn of a key.

Tim Mellard, practice governance coach for the Wakefield acute care pathway, said: “The new names signify a new start for our wards. The redevelopment will enable us to provide even better care to local people. Plus, as these wards are for our local communities, it seems fitting that they’re named after our local communities too.”

The first phase of the redevelopment will open in summer 2017 with the project scheduled for completion in 2018.
