Barnsley neighbourhood nursing – one year on

Dr Crystal Oldman (CBE), chief executive of the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI), was guest speaker at our recent Barnsley neighbourhood nursing celebration event.

The event, held at Priory Campus on Wednesday 20 September 2017, marked the anniversary of the service transforming to a new care model.

The changes were in response to a new service specification from Barnsley CCG. This brought together two teams, district nursing and community matrons, to create coordinated neighbourhood teams. The new model has meant big changes for staff who now work much more closely with other Trust professionals and partners.

One year on, patients in Barnsley are receiving more personalised care and seeing improved outcomes. There has also been a reduction in inappropriate hospital admissions.

Speaking at the event, Dr Oldman commented that she was delighted to see so many people who are passionate about the same thing that the QNI are – delivering great care to patients, carers and families.

Sue Wing, deputy district director, said: “As a Trust our mission is to help people reach their potential and live well in their community.

“The neighbourhood nursing service is a great example of how we do this by delivering the right care, in the right place, at the right time; working in partnership to meet patients’ needs.

“In August alone the service responded to 1,400 referrals for district nursing.

“I’d like to say a big thanks to staff for picking up the challenge and delivering for local people in our communities.”
