Mount Vernon Hospital closure

Date:

Following the successful transfer of the two intermediate care wards from Mount Vernon Hospital to Barnsley Hospital, work is now underway to relocate the remaining services and functions at Mount Vernon. It is expected that this will be complete by the end of December at which point the hospital will close.

Clinical teams are being found new accommodation within the Trust’s existing sites in Barnsley. Priority will be given to finding them space in accessible buildings where our patients and service users will have the best possible experience.

Sean Rayner, district director, said: “Mount Vernon Hospital holds a lot of memories for people in Barnsley. Many have worked there, been treated or visited relatives being cared for on the site.

“The Trust is working as part of new partnerships and commissioning arrangements in Barnsley for the Intermediate Care Service to make sure people have the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

“We are trying to ensure that care is delivered as conveniently as possible for patients and wraps around them, their carers and families.”

Once the hospital closes the Trust intends to sell the site.
