Changes for people living with diabetes in Barnsley

Date: 26 March 2018

Joint message from NHS partners in Barnsley

The service for people living with diabetes in Barnsley is commissioned by Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group and is currently provided by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SWYFT).

From 1 April 2018 the diabetes specialist nurses will be transferring to Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust who will operate the service in partnership with Barnsley Healthcare Federation.

Research shows that people like, and benefit from, care closer to home and the new service will support people living with diabetes both in the community and in Barnsley Hospital when necessary.

For staff, it means that they are moving to a different employer in the NHS but will remain on the same terms and conditions of employment as before.

From 1 April 2018 any patient enquiries regarding the service or individual care should be directed to the Single Point of Access (SPA) Service in Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust by telephoning 01226 240086.

Darren Howlett, Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s Service Manager, said:  “The new service is called Barnsley Integrated Diabetes Service.  It  will provide patient care closer to home and in the Hospital to support patients through education to better manage their own conditions  and better skilling staff in primary care to enhance patient access. Our aim is to implement a truly accessible, streamlined diabetes service for people across Barnsley.”
