Chippendale ward’s sunflower seed sharing sees stems go sky high!

Date:

The weather might be dreary and cold but one of our wards is helping to brighten the atmosphere by having a sunflower growing competition.

Chippendale ward, based on the Fieldhead site in Wakefield, applied for funding from our charity, EyUp!, to fit some raised beds in their courtyard. They used the beds to grow a number of sunflowers (plus a variety of fruits) which grew to over 6 foot tall.

Ward staff are now spreading the sunshine by posting out seeds to neighbouring wards, inviting them to take part in a growing challenge.

Senior healthcare support worker Gareth Creighton said: “We’ve posted out the seeds to wards around the Fieldhead site and we’ve had some really nice emails back from people who are keen to take part. Service users on our ward think it’s a great idea – we just need warmer weather now!”
