Update on Mount Vernon Hospital

The hospital site is currently vacant and being marketed for sale.

Empty properties are a safety risk and securing them is costly. In the case of Mount Vernon Hospital, the building itself will not be required by any potential buyer.

We are therefore proposing to demolish the buildings on site. This is to help keep the local community safe and make the land more appealing to buyers.

The demolition will potentially take place this summer, subject to approval.

With regards to the future use of the site, it’s included in the Barnsley area plan as one that is suitable for housing. Ultimately, the use would be a question for any future owner.
