Speech and language therapy (adult)

The adult speech and language therapy (SLT) department is involved in the assessment, diagnosis and management of voice, communication and swallowing difficulties of anyone aged 18 years or over in the Barnsley area.

Patients are seen in inpatient settings such as the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit, Neurological Rehabilitation Unit, Mount Vernon Hospital or in outpatient settings, including in their own home/care home when appropriate.

Speech and language therapists may be involved in assessing and treating people with communication and/or swallowing difficulties who have the following conditions:

  • Stroke
  • Dementia
  • Acquired and traumatic brain injury
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/compromised respiration
  • Neurodegenerative conditions e.g. Huntington’s, Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Multiple Systems Atrophy, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease
  • Voice difficulties
  • Dysfluency
  • Congenital conditions
