Adult psychological therapies service (specialist psychotherapy team)

The specialist psychotherapy service is part of the adult psychological therapy service in Wakefield. The service consists of three teams based at Fieldhead, Castleford, Normanton and District Hospital and Horbury Health Centre.

Our service provides in-depth assessment, treatment, therapy or consultation to individuals who are experiencing severe, complex and long-standing psychological or mental health difficulties including:

  • Depression
  • Complicated grief reactions
  • Anxiety
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Eating disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Relationship problems
  • Impact of trauma and life events
  • Self-harm
  • Somatic complaints (excessive thoughts, feelings or behaviours relating to bodily symptoms or medical illnesses of unknown origin)

All of our clinicians have had substantial training to specialist level in a variety of modalities. The current clinical team includes an Individual Adult Psychotherapist, a Couple and Family Psychotherapist, an Art Psychotherapist, a Group Psychotherapist and a Medical Psychotherapist.

Individuals referred to our service will have been assessed by the referrer as requiring care that is beyond that which they can receive from primary care services (GPs).

When attending follow-up appointments after discharge most service users said they felt a significant improvement compared to when they were first referred to our service.

Our therapists put the needs of service users at the centre of all decisions and respect your wishes when delivering care.

People accessing our service are treated an individuals and given the utmost dignity and respect throughout their care. Our staff work closely with service users to develop an individually tailored care plan to ensure that they are involved in decisions made throughout their care.
