Using the new Denhale Recreation Centre in Wakefield as a base, Disability Sport Yorkshire are now able to open up new sports and leisure opportunities for people with a disability (and other people with a social care need). We intend to make this facility a hub for disabled people, run by disabled people.
We have designed the Denhale Centre to provide a welcoming place for people with a disability, people with a social care need, and the local community, transforming it from an under-utilised sports venue to a recognised, welcoming and inclusive place to participate in sport and social activities.
Sports taking place at the centre include table tennis, bowls-style seated ball game boccia, and new-age kurling (an adapted version of the original game of curling which allows players to compete on any smooth, flat indoor surface).
As well as a place to take part in regular leisure and social activities, we’ll also be inviting people to participate in running the centre – building skills that they’ll be able to use in future volunteer and employment opportunities. We train staff to ensure that the venue is an accredited ‘Safe Place’, and offer leadership, mentored volunteering and possibly paid work opportunities for people with a disability at the centre.
Our aim is to provide opportunities for 300 people per week by April 2016.
