Involvement network film projects

People involved with this project will develop an accessible DVD on mental health awareness for adults with a learning disability, their carers and staff who support them. There is very little information about that gives people an easy way of understanding and managing mental health conditions. This DVD will be made by members who have a learning disability themselves and will deliver information around mental health that is easy to understand.

The DVD will cover different mental health conditions, how to spot the early signs, and where to go for support. The project leader will work with members to set up a working to plan and develop the DVD and write the scripts.

People with a learning disability are more likely to suffer from mental health problems, and can often find themselves in crisis very quickly, and their diagnosis is often overshadowed by their learning disability. This DVD will empower people by giving them a better understanding of how to deal with their mental health, and therefore give them the chance to receive the right support early enough. It will also teach the members new skills and give them chance to cascade the training to other people with a learning disability in Kirklees.

Support offered through the project includes:

  • Group work
  • Exercise
  • Education
  • Recreational activity
  • Self-care
  • Social skills
