Moving on – building bridges

The moving on – building bridges project aims to promote the health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities and older people through a number of themed events, workshops and performances.

Based on the 5 ways to wellbeing, through this project participants will have the opportunity to:

  • connect and socialise with others in the wider community through the pop-up events and performance
  • learn new skills through the workshops
  • give something back through the pop up events and the  performance
  • engage more with others and their environment
  • be active through dance and music.

Performances and workshops planned include:

  • World war pop up event – sharing information, stories and artefacts from World War 1 and World War 2. Bunting and art displays will transform the setting into the past, with dancers performing traditional dances from the 1930’s and 1940’s.
  • Music and percussion workshops – held fortnightly, the workshops are an opportunity to play different instruments and make music
  • Out of Africa dance performance – a celebration of African food, film, artwork, music and song. People who have taken part in the music workshops will also be performing during the celebration.

The project is person centred as all of the activities and themes for the pop up events have been developed around people’s feedback, experiences and needs. It provides the opportunity for people to express themselves, communicate and celebrate through the arts.

The project not only gives people with learning disabilities a voice in the wider community but it also enables individuals and the group as a whole to contribute and work to their strengths and reach their potential. It provides equality of opportunity for people with learning disabilities to work alongside others in an inclusive way.

Through this project, we aim to raise peoples’ self-esteem and confidence as well as celebrate diversity and difference.
