Get active and get involved in the Calderdale Olympic Torch walking challenge

Date:

Local NHS Trust in Calderdale is inviting staff to get active and get involved by taking part in a special ‘Olympic themed’ walking challenge to see if they can walk the distance it would take to reach London before the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Teams of four are invited to enter the challenge which involves walking the same distance that the Olympic torch will travel from Halifax to London between 24th June and 27th July.

Each team must have four members, an Olympic themed team name and nominate a captain who will be responsible for collating their teams weekly walking distance totals. Each team member will be given a pedometer to record the distances they have walked.

The challenge has been organised by staff at South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust as part of ‘get active get involved 2012’ – a series of interactive, creative and sporting events that have been organised across the districts where the Trust provides services to give local people the opportunity to get active and get involved in events held in support of London 2012.

Smehra Ikhlak, community health trainer at the Trust said, "We have organised the walking challenge to give staff the opportunity to get involved in an activity that will boost their physical and mental wellbeing, can be carried out anywhere and encourages social interaction and team work.

"To take part in the challenge teams need to register their team names and members before 15th June, when they will be issued with pedometers and recording forms, ready to start the challenge on the 24th June. The challenge can be completed anytime before 27th July."
