New multi faith room for local hospital
Date: 24 October 2008
South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust has opened a new multi-faith facility today at Newton Lodge, Fieldhead in Wakefield. The facility is available for use by people who use Trust services, their carers, staff and visitors.
The multi faith room has been named ‘The Sanctuary’ and was opened by the Trust’s chief executive, Steven Michael.
People who use the Trust’s services were heavily involved in the planning and developing of The Sanctuary and some performed their own songs and poems at today’s opening event.
The Sanctuary gives people who use services at Fieldhead access to a space where they can practice their chosen faith. It also gives those who are not religious a place to go for peace and quiet.
The room benefits from a growing library of spiritual and religious books, which are available to anyone who visits the facility.
Michael Gartland, head of pastoral and spiritual care said, "There is a lovely, tranquil atmosphere in the room and some beautiful, therapeutic surroundings. There is a stunning, 20kg labradorite stone on display and service users have created some wonderful painted glass panels giving the windows a ‘stain glass’ effect."
The Trust’s chief executive Steven Michael said, "I’m delighted that we can now provide a place where people can practice their faith, or even just go to escape from the stresses of daily life."
