Carers and service users invited to revamped coffee morning

Date:

The South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is inviting anyone who uses or has used older people’s mental health services and carers to a revamped coffee group in Huddersfield.

The Lounge 65 group will take place weekly at Gateway to Care, 30 Market Street, Huddersfield, offering people the chance to socialise and discuss issues affecting local mental health services. The Trust, which provides mental health and learning disability services across Wakefield, Calderdale and Kirklees, believes it is vital to remember the needs of both carers and people who use the Trust’s services, and support them as best they can. It recognises the valuable role carers play in looking after and supporting people with mental health problems and learning disabilities and hopes groups like this will give them time to reflect on experiences and learn more about local services.

Through these weekly coffee mornings service users and carers can share their experiences and have access to support among people who can offer a unique insight into mental health.

Clinical psychologist in training Leigh Thorpe, who has helped organise the group, said, "Although the main aim of the group is social, a member of mental health staff will be there for some of the time to offer professional support. It is hoped that the group will eventually be service-user led and that dialogue from members can help influence the development of mental health services in their area."

The group includes light refreshments and activities designed to boost mental wellbeing through interaction and involvement.
