MP Mary Creagh praises new NHS service

Date:

Wakefield MP Mary Creagh, has visited a new mental health service in Wakefield. The low secure facility at Fieldhead on Ouchthorpe Lane provides assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for people with severe mental disorders who require management under low secure conditions.

The Bretton Centre is a 43 bedded unit for men from the Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield districts and is run by South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust.

The facility has greatly expanded the service and now includes a new pre discharge unit and a Therapy and Recreation Centre called the Oasis Centre. The Bretton Centre is the result of a major refurbishment costing just over £8m and has brought new jobs to the Wakefield area.

The new facility has transformed existing space into a high quality, bright and pleasant environment for patients and staff as well as incorporating the very latest in safety security equipment. There are number of discrete inpatient areas within the service so that people can receive individualised treatment in an environment that suits their differing needs from admission through to discharge.

During her visit Mary Creagh was introduced to the Trust’s chief executive Steven Michael and non-executive director Jan Wilson. She was then given a tour of the facility and had the opportunity to meet various staff members, listen to an overview of the service and ask questions to find out more about what the service offers and how it benefits local people.

She said, "It is wonderful to come to Fieldhead and see how government investment is improving mental health services here in Wakefield. I’m very impressed with the dedication of the staff and the quality of the new unit and the peaceful environment it provides. Around 60 new jobs have been created by this new development which is great for the area. It has also made it much easier for local families to visit their loved ones. All in all it is good news for the district."

Non-executive director Jan Wilson said "This is my first visit to the Bretton Centre and I am very impressed with the facilities here and the quality of the refurbishment. I am also impressed by the capacity of the unit and its capability to give people a better quality of life."
