Wakefield Wildcats throw their weight behind NHS wellbeing initiative

Date:

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats rugby league club is supporting the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s wellbeing month and is calling on local Wildcat fans to get involved.

The Trust, which provides mental health and learning disability services in Wakefield, is organising wellbeing month in October to raise awareness of mental health issues, reduce stigma and promote wellbeing.

Events are being held across the region from 1st October to 31st October 2010 and now the Wildcats have backed the initiative and are calling on fans to show their own support and help promote mental wellbeing across Wakefield.

Physical activity, such as rugby, can make a big difference to mental wellbeing. It is hoped events throughout October will spread the message that 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in the course of a year, but unlike other medical issues mental illness doesn’t always generate understanding and sympathy.

The Trust’s chief executive, Steven Michael, said: “Research has proven that exercise can have a positive affect on our mental health – and considering 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem we should all be exercising more often! For the people who use our services we witness how exercise can bring many positive benefits, particularly helping them build confidence and higher levels of self-esteem. We’re asking people to think about holding events or activities in support any time during October."

Throughout the month events and activities are being planned all designed to boost wellbeing. Events can be large or small, open to the public or to specific groups only. Existing activities and events can also be held during wellbeing month and simply added to the listings – it’s a great way for community organisations to reach new audiences.

The Wildcat’s mascot will be appearing at at least one of the Trust’s events during wellbeing month, reminding local people that we all need to take part in activities that look after our wellbeing.

To be a part of wellbeing month, organisations or groups simply need to submit a listing at: www.southwestyorkshire.nhs.uk where they can also find more information. Or call 01924 328656 or email inclusion@swyt.nhs.uk
