Wakefield’s heptathlon games – now officially inspired by London 2012

Date:

Wakefield’s heptathlon games, a series of seven sporting events taking place across this summer, have been officially granted the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme.

The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said, "The Inspire programme is ensuring the legacy of the 2012 Games starts now as projects like Wakefield’s heptathlon games are enabling local people in Wakefield to make positive life changes."

Wakefield’s heptathlon games have been organised by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust health and wellbeing development team in partnership with Age UK Wakefield district and other local partners. They will feature seven events, organised across Wakefield for local people aged 50 + and adults with a physical disability and or sensory impairment.

The events organised include a Great North Row challenge, a cycle relay around Thornes Park’s running track, a golf tournament and a 1 mile swim challenge, which will take place between May and October 2012.

Jill Poole, health and wellbeing development team lead said, "We are really excited to have been successful in our application to use the Inspire mark. The games we have organised will challenge people to get involved and achieve a goal that they can be proud of, we want to encourage them to ‘go for gold’. The events will also be tailored to meet people’s needs so everyone can get involved regardless of their age, physical or sensory abilities."

Lisa Spivey, project development manager with Age UK in Wakefield said, "It is really important for older people to maintain their fitness and social involvement and this partnership inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and endorsed by the Inspire mark is a brilliant way for older people to become involved. We are pleased to have this opportunity to develop our health and wellbeing work in such a positive way."

Full details of all the events taking place during Wakefield’s heptathlon games will be available on the Trust’s website www.southwestyorkshire.nhs.uk and for more details about how people can get involved contact Daniel Eades on 01977 705473 or Lisa Spivey on 01977 552114
