Wakefield heptathlon games hosts football tournament

Local people aged over 50 or those with a physical and/or sensory impairment are invited to get active and get involved in 2012 and show off their footie skills in a football tournament as part of the Wakefield heptathlon games.

Teams of five are invited to sign up to the football tournament and the winning teams from each area will qualify for the final. The football games will be played at: • Hemsworth (West End) – Friday 6th July – 6pm – 8pm • Wakefield (Portobello) – Friday 13th July – 6pm – 8pm • Pontefract (Chequerfield) – Friday 20th July – 6pm – 8pm • Glasshoughton, Final – Friday 27th July – 6pm – 8pm

The football tournament is open to anyone aged over 50 or with a physical or sensory impairment and all participants will be entered into a prize draw to win a membership at a local public sports facility.

The Wakefield heptathlon games have been organised by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s health and wellbeing development team in partnership with Age UK Wakefield district, Wakefield council and other local partners, in support of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The heptathlon games will feature a series of seven sporting events including 1 mile swim challenge, a 10k walk at Nostell Priory and a golden age triathlon, taking place between May to October.

Jill Poole, health and wellbeing development team lead said, "Physical activity and social inclusion can make a big difference to a person’s physical and mental wellbeing, and we have organised the heptathlon games to give local people the opportunity to do this.

"The Wakefield heptathlon games is a series of seven sporting events for people aged 50 plus and adults with a physical disability and/ or sensory impairment. The games include a number of challenges that are tailored to meet the requirements of those taking part such as the adapted cycle relay at Thornes Park, a 10k walk at Nostel Priory, a golf tournament and a one mile swim.

"We hope the heptathlon games will challenge people to get involved and achieve a goal that they can be proud of."
