New gallery opens in Huddersfield to showcase Creative Minds

Date:

A new gallery has opened in a Huddersfield shopping centre to give local people and those who have experienced mental health problems the opportunity to showcase their creative pieces of art.

The Packhorse gallery is being run by Support 2 Recovery, a local charity that works with individuals experiencing mental health problems to reach their goals and received funding from Kirklees council’s community partnerships development grant.

The gallery has also received funding through South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s Creative Minds.

Creative Minds works with local organisations in partnership to improve people’s health and wellbeing through creative activity.

Artwork and crafts on display at the gallery have been produced by people in touch with Support 2 Recovery and members of the public and are available to buy.

Sian Smith, project lead for the Packhorse gallery said, "We have set up the gallery to not only offer local artists the opportunity to display their work but also to promote positive messages about mental health. There is a display stand in the gallery with lots of information about different mental health conditions and all staff who work here can offer people further information and support about local services that can help those currently experiencing mental health difficulties."

"The gallery is also an opportunity for us to provide a space for people to come and create their artwork. Currently we run a group on Monday morning for people who are in touch with Support 2 Recovery and we are hoping to establish lunchtime sessions which anyone would be able to come along to."

Steven Michael Chief Executive of South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said, "We wish the gallery every success and are delighted to have been a part of their set-up. This is a great example of how we hope our Creative Minds strategy will bring positive benefits to Kirklees; using creative partnership approaches to healthcare not usually associated with the NHS."

The gallery is situated on the ground floor in the Packhorse shopping centre, Huddersfield city centre.
