The Barnsley community equipment service, which is part of South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, is celebrating after being shortlisted in a prestigious national award scheme – recognising the service provided for Barnsley residents.
The service provides health and social equipment in Barnsley with the aim of supporting community care and promotes the independence and dignity of service users.
The service has been shortlisted at this year’s Health Service Journal (HSJ) Efficiency Awards in the Efficiency in Transportation and Logistics category.
The awards aim to recognise innovative measures introduced to deliver efficiency savings at NHS Trusts. The Barnsley community equipment service has been shortlisted as they were able to demonstrate a clear focus on safety and energy efficiency whilst increasing efficiency in terms of cost savings and improving productivity.
The service have recently designed and developed an innovative modular decontamination unit, thought to be the first of its kind in the NHS. As a result, the service is now providing decontamination, warehousing and transportation facilities for a range of NHS services in the area.
Wayne Bendelow, operational manager in the service explained, "Efficient high quality community equipment services are essential for many staff working throughout the local NHS community including district nurses, GP’s and physiotherapists; and in a range of situations such as when people are discharged from hospital. The work we have been doing over the last year to increase the range of services we can carry out ourselves, plus improvements to our management of tasks, has helped us to raise the overall performance of our service and achieve our objective – to deliver and retrieve as many health and social items on time, in full working order and in the most efficient and cost effective way possible.
"The team are thrilled to have been shortlisted for the awards and we attended a judging day in July to present details of our entry to a judging panel. Now it’s fingers crossed for the awards ceremony in September."
