Local people invited to get creative with South Asian arts

Date:

People in Kirklees with a physical and/ or learning disability are invited to get involved with creative activities including visual art, dance and music at two celebratory events in November.

The events are being run by Manasamitra, a South Asian arts organisation, as a celebration of a project they have been running to give people living with a physical and/ or learning disability in Kirklees, the opportunity to take part in and try out new activities inspired by South Asian arts.

The project has been delivered as part of South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s Creative Minds strategy, which underlines the Trust’s commitment to promote more opportunities for individuals and groups to develop and grow creatively.

The celebratory events, where attendees will have the opportunity to try out Bollywood dancing, Indian arts and crafts and musical instruments, will be held on:

• Monday 5th November, from 11am – 1pm, at Huddersfield Town Hall, Ramsden Street, Huddersfield, HD1 2TA

• Thursday 8th November, from 11am – 1pm, at Dewsbury Town Hall, Wakefield old road, Dewsbury, WF12 8DG

Nigel McLoughlin, clinical services manager for learning disabilities at the Trust said, “This project has proved to be really popular with people in our local communities who have made the most of the opportunity to try their hand at something new. Taking part in social activities such as those that Manasamitra have run as part of this project can have a really big impact on people’s self esteem and confidence and can help them to develop new skills.”

Supriya Nagarajan, Manasamitra’s Artistic Director said “Manasamitra have delivered 40 fun filled South Asian music and dance sessions in North and South Kirklees to more than 60 people each week for the last 3 months which have been thoroughly enjoyed by all. This has been a brilliant opportunity for participants, generously funded by the NHS, which we have been delighted to deliver. Feedback from everyone involved has been very positive.”
