Calderdale residents urged to give up smoking for good on World No Tobacco Day

People in Calderdale are being urged to kick the habit and give up smoking today on World No Tobacco Day.

The day is being organised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and aims to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and the damage it causes.

Tobacco use is a major cause of coronary heart disease, lung and other cancers, and respiratory diseases, particularly Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

To help people kick the habit Calderdale Stop Smoking Service are encouraging any Calderdale residents to get in touch withthem and get help from their team of specialist stop smoking advisors.

Calderdale Stop Smoking Service is provided by the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. The Trust provides a range of mental health, learning disability, health improvement and community services in Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield.

Andrea Cadwell, service manager for Calderdale Stop Smoking Service said: “Our specialist NHS advisors really can help you change your life. Over the past ten years we have helped over 10,000people in Calderdale stop smoking for good. We offer tailored advice to help you stop smoking in a way that suits you.”

“The service is free, friendly and confidential and is available to everyone. I would urge anyone who wants help to stop smoking to get in touch with us. We provide expert advice and specially designed stop smoking support programmes that suit you. We also provide specialist advice for any pregnant women who want help to stop smoking.”

Dean used the Calderdale Stop Smoking Service to help quit after smoking for 30 years and hasn’t looked back since: “The change has been amazing. I used to get out of breath but now I can just keep on going. I can taste food again and actually enjoy my food now. When I smoked I used to wake up every morning with a headache. But I’ve not had once since I gave up. I look back and think why did I start smoking? I know for sure now that I’ll never smoke again.”

The team has community based stop smoking advisors available in most GP practices and several pharmacies across Calderdale.
