Halloween celebrations on older people’s ward

Staff at the Chantry Unit

Service users on our Chantry Unit at Fieldhead Hospital in Wakefield have benefitted from taking part in creative therapeutic activities in the build-up to 31 October.

The unit offers treatment for over 65’s with mental health problems and offers a range of support and therapies.

Halloween preparations began a few weeks prior to the night itself. Service users had the opportunity to go shopping in Wakefield to choose their own arts and crafts materials. They then used these to make skeletons and bats to decorate the dining room.

October 31 was a full day of activity for staff and service users with a themed party featuring spooky decorations and baked goods.

Healthcare assistant Carla Wright said: “Staff made sure every service user had the opportunity to get involved right from the start. The party was a chance for everybody to interact and have fun. Service users had a great time and everyone enjoyed the Halloween cakes. This sort of event is a fantastic way for service users to express themselves creatively. We’re thinking that our next one could be a way of doing some festive fundraising for charity.”
