Our Year 2018 – 19

We have been rated as ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Following a fresh inspection in May and June 2019, the CQC has recognised improvements made and the strength and quality of the services we provide. The Trust was previously rated as ‘Requires Improvement’ in July 2018.

Over 87% of areas assessed by the CQC when deciding a rating have now been highlighted as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ and this is thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff.

Our vision is to provide outstanding physical, mental and social care in a modern health and care system. We exist to help people reach their potential and live well in their community. We have supported thousands of people to do that in the last year.

Quality is a top priority and we over-achieved on our Sign Up to Safety targets. We achieved or exceeded the majority of our commissioner and regulator targets for quality and access. Our most recent friends and family test results show that 99% of staff would recommend community services and 95% would recommend mental health services.

We delivered, and exceeded, all of our financial targets. We worked hard to tackle an underlying deficit issue which NHS Improvement asked us to reduce. With the resulting provider sustainability funding we posted a £3.1m surplus overall which we are able to invest in facilities. We now need to get back into a surplus position without that help.

We continued to make a huge investment in mental health services for people in South and West Yorkshire during 2018/19. Our Fieldhead master plan is a £17m redevelopment of non-secure mental health units for adults of working age, as well as our older people’s inpatient unit. We’ve funded this entirely from our own reserves and are not tied into any maintenance contracts. This project supports our on-going commitment to improve services for local people. The master plan is now nearing completion with an official opening to take place in late 2019.

We have reduced staff sickness and turnover and 99% of staff had an appraisal in the past year. We exceeded our flu targets, with over 75% of front line staff getting vaccinated, and won a national award for our innovative campaign. We saw improved WRES results and delivered on supervision and training numbers despite pressures on services.

We also welcomed two new non-executive directors in August 2018 – Sam Young and Erfana Mahmood.

Innovation continues to be fundamental to our work. We delivered a new clinical record system and secured our IT infrastructure. We developed a mental health alliance in Wakefield and delivered programmes of work across West Yorkshire and Harrogate. We celebrated the achievements of staff and volunteers at our Excellence 2018 awards.

In 2018/19 we improved performance, faced challenges, won new awards, accreditations and most importantly lived our values.

2018/19 was a year of changes and opportunities. The Trust continues to play a leading role in both West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership and the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw integrated care system.

This past financial year saw the publication of the NHS Long Term Plan and planning is now underway to deliver it. It is pleasing to see that there is a strong alignment between the Trust’s strategy and ambitions and those of the NHS as a whole.

We know that there are service and financial pressures in the health system and in our local government partners. At the same time, we have recently seen much needed targeted investment in new services like perinatal mental health, eating disorders for adults and CAMHS “New Models of Care” for the most vulnerable children.

Fundamental to our future as an organisation, and as part of a regional health and social care system, is focusing on improvement. With safety and quality always as our top priority, we must make sure that we are working in the best and most efficient way that we possibly can.

Going forward into 2019/20 we have added a new Trust strategic objective: making it a great place to work. This means supporting staff wellbeing, having better conversations with people and making sure that staff feel that work is a supportive and nurturing environment. We have fantastic, dedicated, caring staff and last year we had an incredible response to our NHS70 superstars campaign where we asked staff to celebrate each other. In total we had over 1,500 citations.

Sam Jarvis from rehabilitation and recovery services in Kirklees was nominated by a colleague who said: “Sam passionately supports the services and staff that she manages. She embodies our Trust values especially in putting the people we support first and that their families and carers matter. She is compassionate and caring and definitely leads by example.”

John Tan-Jones who works at Folly Hall started as a volunteer and now works on the admin bank; he was nominated by colleagues who said: “John is a valuable asset to the Folly Hall Team, he is always willing to assist anybody with any jobs they need doing and has demonstrated his commitment to the trust by travelling from a great distance in the snow and ice to ensure he is here to support his colleagues and the service users. He was a great help during transformation and will turn his hand to any task that is required of him. John is an example to us all.”

Ampi Meenadchisundaram, a psychiatrist with the Lundwood enhanced team was nominated “For being the hardworking backbone of a team; and for being a very human psychiatrist”. His colleague wrote “I have the utmost respect for his intelligence and his compassion.”

Sophie Newberry, incident management support officer and Fieldhead was praised “For her commitment to learning, outstanding work ethics and putting the needs of the service first”.

It’s fantastic to see so many staff really living our values and striving to always deliver outstanding services for local people. For 2019/20 our mission continues to be helping people reach their potential and live well in their community. We will do this by focussing on health, care closer to home, resources and making this Trust a great place to work.

I am delighted that that the CQC has recognised the significant improvement since their last inspection in 2018 and that the Trust is well led. Once again inspectors praised the kindness and caring attitude of staff. They also noted that there is a strong and consistent emphasis on the strategy and values of the Trust from leaders and front line staff. The challenge now is to continue striving to be outstanding in all we do.
