We embraced change and tackled challenges
In July 2018 the Care Quality Commission changed our rating as an organisation from ‘Good’ to ‘Requires Improvement’. We have been making rapid improvements in response.
The use of agency staff is a key pressure and we spent £6.5m against a target of £5.2m. This was £0.7m higher than the spend on agency staff in the previous year. Temporary staff are a vital component of our workforce, but it is important we are able to offer our service users and patients permanent staff they are familiar with and to demonstrate value for money.
We’ve done significant work on reducing use of out-of-area beds. We’ve introduced criteria-led discharge, including recruitment of discharge coordinators. We’ve also focussed on the root causes to establish how we can support improvement and this will be a continued focus for 19/20
Long waits for autism spectrum disorder are being tackled and our child and adolescent mental health services in Barnsley and Wakefield are working to improve.
Sickness absence was 5% for 2018/19 above our 4.5% target.
We re-launched our Barnsley IAPT service following a competitive tendering process, successfully changing the model and delivering targets.
We introduced a new improved clinical records system – SystmOne.
We continued to play a key role in the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership and the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw integrated care system.
