Active for Life is a well established exercise referral scheme run by Kirklees Council. They provide support for those experiencing severe mental ill health to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to access mainstream physical activity and sports opportunities in the local community.
Active for Life currently run regular cycling activity sessions using traffic-free greenways around Spenborough in North Kirklees and through this project are expanding their cycling programme to Huddersfield. This will provide the residents of South Kirklees with the opportunity to get involved in the activities and enjoy the mental and physical health benefits of cycling.
The cycle activity sessions allow people who may not otherwise have access to a bicycle and suitable facilities to enjoy cycling in a safe environment. Sessions take place on a weekly basis with a leader from the Active for Life team who plans a safe route and ensures the group have working bicycles and are able to ride them safely.
By taking part in the sessions, Active for Life will encourage people with mental health issues to more active more often to benefit not only their physical but mental wellbeing. Participants will gain from the social interaction skills being part of a group environment brings, develop skills, confidence and knowledge to continue in other physical activities and discover new skills relating to cycling such as cycle maintenance and group leadership.
The sessions are free to take part in and a currently open to anyone receiving treatment from mental health services.
