Great Outdoors

Great Outdoors is a project that is designed to maximise access to and participation in outdoor green spaces for people who are experiencing a wide range of mental health issues, including dementia. It is run in partnership between Kirklees Council and S2R (Support to Recovery)

A key factor for project participants is building social capital at individual and community levels. The project engages with people who are in recovery from serious mental illness and with people who need additional meaningful activity as part of a plan to prevent emotional problems or issues associated with their dementia from escalating.

Great Outdoors helps people to improve their wellbeing by becoming involved in volunteering in the parks, woodland and countryside, as well as in town and village centres. The project includes growing sunflowers to celebrate July’s Tour de France, working to increase the bee population in Greenhead Park and activities such as fishing, walking, allotments and food growing will soon be starting.
