Locomotion is a newly created dance company that provides opportunities for people who love to dance and want the chance to perform. Creative and skills based sessions lead towards making dance performances to take to other groups and beyond.
The dance company has been developed from its first tour to South Africa in 2012, which was supported by the Trust. Building on this Locomotion works to develop challenging pieces, put on tours to unusual venues and deliver messages about mental health.
Locomotion is purposefully structured to consist of people with identified mental health needs, established artists, developing artists and volunteers taking combined responsibility for the company and its future sustainability. Within the company are people of different ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds. This layering of ages, culture, experience and skills offers interaction of company members and encourages the breaking down of barriers. The company is led by Gerry Turvey, HOOT’s experienced dance leader.
