Canals Connect

Canals Connect was a three month project run by Faceless in Castleford, Knottingley and Pontefract. The project was made up of 18 creative workshops for people who use local Trust services. The company used silk painting as a method to look at how we view our communities and the landscapes around us, including the waterways which run through the district.

Using silk painting the sessions explored people’s views of, and their connection with, the waterways and landscapes within their communities. Faceless worked in community centres, independent living schemes, with voluntary and community groups, with a wide range of ages and abilities.

Over 187 people took part in 18 free workshops, using creative techniques accessible to all, to increase their wellbeing and create a sense of belonging to their area. The workshops encouraged trans-generational working and provided a relaxing, social atmosphere for participants.

As part of the project, 3 art books with prints of each artwork created on the project have been made. Participants also kept their silk paintings to display both at home and within their group.

Participants were also signposted to other creative activities in their area.
