The ‘going up in the world’ project enables service users at Newhaven, a low secure learning disability service in Wakefield, to try something new and take part in indoor climbing.
Following requests from service users, the project was set up to enable them to learn new skills and increase their confidence and self-esteem. The 3-week course is designed to take novice climbers through various skills such as bouldering and rope walls. Once they have successfully completed the course, service users will be able to access the climbing walls.
The project allows a group of service users to access mainstream leisure activities which develop their social skills, boost wellbeing and increase confidence. After the group have completed the course, the activity will be evaluated and, following feedback, further sessions may be offered to those interested.
