New project launched in Kirklees to get people involved with creative activities

Date:

People in Kirklees with a physical and/ or learning disability are invited to get involved with creative activities including visual art, dance and music at the launch of an exciting new project.

The project, which is being run by Manasamitra, a South Asian arts organisation in Dewsbury, has been designed for people over the age of 14, living with a physical and/ or learning disability in Kirklees, to give them the opportunity to take part in and try out new activities inspired by South Asian arts.

The project is being delivered as part of South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s Creative Minds strategy, which underlines the Trust’s commitment to promote more opportunities for individuals and groups to develop and grow creatively.

The project will be launched at two events in Kirklees, where attendees will have the opportunity to try out Bollywood dancing, Indian arts and crafts and musical instruments. The events are being held on: • Friday 23rd March, 1pm – 3pm at Dewsbury Town Hall • Monday 26th March, 1pm – 3pm at Huddersfield Town Hall

Supriya Nagarajan, Manasamitra’s Artistic Director said, "This project aims to bring together the unique approaches used within the arts, sports, leisure and cultural sector to develop fun creative activities for people using healthcare services. The project will see a number of similar events organised throughout 2012 to stimulate and inspire individuals and encourage them to get involved in activities. "

Phil Walters, head of inclusion at the Trust said, "Current health and social care research shows that participating in creative approaches can increase people’s self esteem, provide them with a sense of purpose and improve their quality of life.

"As one of the Trust’s creative partners, Manasamitra are part of a strong and growing group of community organisations who are working with the Trust to provide creative projects for local people."
