Launch of new musculoskeletal (MSK) service

Date:

From 1 April we will be delivering a new model of care for people in Barnsley.

The changes are bringing two existing teams services within the Trust, assessment & treatment and Musculoskeletal outpatient physiotherapy, together. The service will now be known as the community MSK physiotherapy service.

The team offers treatment for a wide range of conditions such as short-term and chronic back and neck pain, sciatica/lumbago, whiplash, joint pain and stiffness, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia.

We are continuing to deliver MSK services in Barnsley following a successful bid as part of a competitive tendering process. The service is commissioned by Barnsley CCG.

The community MSK physiotherapy service will be based at New Street with clinics in Darton, Hoyland, Monk Bretton, New Street, Penistone and Thurnscoe. The contact number for the team is 01226 644858.

Referrals to this service are now via GPs, so patients can make an appointment with their local surgery in order to access support. An improvement under the new model of care is that referrals will be triaged in a timely manner once they have been received by the Trust.

Sean Rayner, district director, said: “The focus of our new service is to empower people to manage their conditions; this fits very well with our Trust mission to help people reach their potential and live well in their community.

“The community MSK physiotherapy service will continue to be delivered by our highly professional staff, rated as ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission in their most recent inspection.”
