Newton Lodge activity day for Learning disability awareness week

Date:

Service users at Newton Lodge today took part in an afternoon of activity to celebrate learning disability awareness week. Newton Lodge has secure wards for people with a learning disability and service users were keen to come together and mark this awareness week in a special way.

There were information stands where service users could get advice on healthy eating, how to stop smoking, and help with their general health. As well as this, service users could make their own smoothies, have some healthy snacks and take part in a raffle to win fruit and veg hampers. To build on the national excitement about the World Cup there was also a penalty shoot-out.

Many service users from different wards on Newton Lodge attended the event to celebrate learning disability awareness week, with feedback from them saying they felt that the event had brought people together and helped to increase the profile of LD services.

Thank you to the sponsors who provided the raffle prizes. These were kindly donated by Blacker Hall Farm, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Kirkburton Hardware and Pet Supplies, Shepley Spring, Thorncliffe Farm Shop, and Newstead Dental Clinic. Many of the other donations were provided by the Newton Lodge staff.

Learning Disability Week is the national week devoted to raising awareness about learning disability.
