Trust support ‘Funday for adults with learning disabilities’

Date:

Creative Minds and the Kirklees learning disability team joined forces to once again present the exciting Funday for adults with learning disabilities. The ever popular event is held four times annually, with the Funday on Tuesday 3 September, being the third of the year. The day was supported by partners; Huddersfield Giants Community Trust, Huddersfield Town Foundation and West Riding County FA with delivery of fun summer fete activities, games and multi-sports.

Alex Feather, Creative Minds Co-ordinator, said: “This is an activity day for people of all abilities and a big event which sees lots of people coming together, meeting new people and having a fun day. The event acts as a stepping stone for adults with learning disabilities to experience and get into other activities and we (staff, service users and their carers) love it.”

With over 100 people in attendance, including service users and carers, at the Zone in Huddersfield, the day was filled with fun and joy for everyone involved. On one pitch, the qualified coaches from Huddersfield Giants Community Trust and Huddersfield Town Foundation held various multi-sport inclusion sessions running from 10.30am to 2pm. These included; football, touch rugby, cricket and cheerleading in the form of group activities tailored for adults with learning disability to engage, participate and enjoy whilst experiencing different sports.

Whilst on the other pitch, the Kirklees learning disability team held various games and summer fete activities including football shootout, splat-the-rat, volleyball, hook-a-duck, target football, skittle bowling and many more. The activities were focused on inclusion, team/group play and gaining confidence to get involved.

The event was well received by everyone in attendance with enthusiastic responses and positive feedback.

Kirsten, 23, said: “It is quite nice, I would come again and have enjoyed everything.”

Vicky, 32, added: “Absolutely stunning event – it’s amazing how people get the opportunity to learn new things and meet new people. I especially loved the cheerleading and want to carry on with this in the future.”
