Our commitment to family, friends, and carers

We recognise the difficult job thousands of carers do in supporting family members and loved ones accessing our services. We also recognise our staff with caring responsibilities.

This commitment was developed jointly by the Trust, carers network members, carer champions, and partners to ensure we build a strong, sustainable, diverse and inclusive carer aware environment.

Our commitments to you

You will be recognised, valued and involved.

This means we will:

  • Identify you as a carer at first contact or soon as possible.
  • Offer you a carer passport, carer pathway leaflet, and a carer lanyard and/or ID card.
  • Ask how you want to be involved in the care of the person you care for.
  • Give you the opportunity to discuss your experiences.
  • Listen to what you say, communicate clearly with you, and make information and communication accessible for all.
  • Embed a ‘think carer’ approach in discussions and decisions at all levels.
  • Build strong foundations for working together to create positive change.

Our staff will be trained to be aware of carers’ needs.

This means we will:

  • Enable and empower you to recognise and address your own health and wellbeing needs.
  • Signpost you to relevant partner carer support services when required.
  • Recognise that no two carers’ situations are the same, adapting to your individual needs and circumstances.
  • Recognise you are an “expert by experience” and should be involved and engaged at every stage of care.
  • Involve you in the co-production of resources including reviews of our staff carer awareness training.
  • Include our staff in developing information and support for carers by becoming active carer champions.
  • Focus on race and ethnicity and consider the intersectionality of our carers.
  • Recognise the needs of young carers.
