“Seeing people improve, smile, or just feel better for an hour makes it worth it.” – Daryl’s volunteering story

“My name is Daryl, I’m 38, and I volunteer with the Trust mainly in fitness-based roles. I help run boxing sessions,A photo of volunteer Daryl football sessions, and general physical activity groups for people who are experiencing mental health challenges. I enjoy doing a bit of everything – boxing, football, running drills – whatever helps people get active and feel better.

“My journey into volunteering is closely linked to my own mental health. When I was 17, I spent time in a mental health hospital and then moved through different services for several years. During that time, I got involved in a football group. That group helped me massively – it gave me structure, confidence, and something positive to focus on.

“Later on, a staff member from the wellbeing team encouraged me to try volunteering. I had been a service user myself, so I understood what people were going through. When a volunteering opportunity came up, I decided to give it a go.

“I’ve volunteered in a few different places. I usually work alongside another volunteer, Andrew, and sometimes staff members join in too. The Trust is really supportive and works around my needs.

“I plan most of the sessions myself. For boxing, I put together combinations, pad work, and fitness drills. For football, I set up warm ups, drills, and small games. Sometimes we do running sessions – even 5K runs when people are up for it. Everything is scheduled, so people know when sessions are happening and can build a routine.

“Volunteering helps my mental health more than anything. Being active, being outside, and being around people makes a huge difference. I know from my own experience how important it is to get out of the house, even for something small. Fresh air, movement, and connection really help.

“In December 2025, I had the opportunity to travel to Lanzarote with my mum and twin brother, along with some friends from my running club, to take part in the Lanzarote 10K. I loved running in the sun in December, swimming in the sea, and sharing it all with my family.  We immediately decided to come back the following year.

“I also enjoy helping others. Seeing people improve, smile, or just feel a bit better for an hour makes it worth it. One of the best parts is seeing people who were nervous at first start to enjoy themselves. Sometimes someone will come to a session quiet and unsure, and by the end they’re laughing, joining in, and feeling proud of what they’ve done. Those moments remind me why I keep doing it.

“At the moment, I’m not looking for employment – volunteering is the right level for me. It gives me purpose without pressure. The Trust is a good place to volunteer because they understand people’s needs and work around them. I’d definitely recommend volunteering.”
