Emily’s story
Emily Carter is a secretary for Kirklees IAPT based at Folly Hall. Emily, who lives in Kirklees, was recognised by a member of staff for understanding what it means to place a person first and make somebody the centre of your care.
I’m part of a team who receive calls and emails from clients referring themselves into the IAPT service, making and sending appointments, booking into the therapists’ diaries and ensuring the day runs smoothly for all of us.
I always try and put myself in the client’s position. It’s important to think about how I can make them feel comfortable and at ease in a way that I would like to feel if I was to refer myself to the service. Our clients could be dealing with mental health difficulties for a long time before contacting the service and it is a big step to overcome. Time, patience, putting the client first and good communication skills are crucial in my job role.
I know how difficult it can be to ask for help at times and to speak to someone you don’t know when you are dealing with your mental health. In my job role, what is important to me is helping someone to make the step forward and by providing a great service from the start goes a long way. This nomination has made me feel very appreciated and valued to be recognised for what I do.
To me, an NHS Superstar means a person who has a passion to make a real difference to the organisation and the people we support.
