Calderdale people asked to have their say on future of local NHS

Date:

People from across the Calderdale area are being invited to influence the future of mental health and learning disability services in the area at a unique event.

South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust is applying to become an NHS Foundation Trust and is holding a meeting to discuss its’ plans with local people at Halifax central library on Wednesday 18th April (at 5:30pm). A Foundation Trust is a new type of organisation, where local people, patients and staff join as ‘members’ and can influence how the Trust is run.

As well as learning about Foundation Trusts, people will also have the opportunity to learn about how they can look after their own mental health through diet and exercise. The healthy living partnership team from Calderdale Primary Care Trust will be on hand to give advice on keeping healthy, and will be offering free healthy food tasting.

Chief executive Steven Michael says, "Given that one in four of us will a have a mental health problem in the course of a year, it’s important that local people get the services they deserve. Foundation Trusts are based around membership and giving people a real say in their local health service. We want to know what people think about our plans to become a Foundation Trust, and we’d like to invite everyone to our public meeting at Halifax library. Becoming a Foundation Trust is a great opportunity for local people to become involved in their local NHS and have a say on how services are developed."

There will be refreshments at 5:30pm and the meeting will start at 6:00pm, in room 1, Halifax central library, 18th April.
