Barnsley residents invited to take the leap on No Smoking Day

Date:

The Barnsley specialist stop smoking service is inviting local people to take the leap this No Smoking Day and quit smoking for good.

This year’s No Smoking Day, which is part of an initiative provided by the British Heart Foundation, takes place on Wednesday 14 March. On this day more than a million smokers are expected to make a quit attempt.

Zoe Styring, service manager said, "We know that most smokers would really like to stop, but find it hard to. So this No Smoking Day we’re making it as easy as possible by bringing our specialist advisers to you."

Information stands will be set up in the Alhambra Shopping Centre from 9am- 5pm and in the restaurant at Barnsley Hospital from 10.30am- 4.30pm. Specialist advisers from the service will be on hand for anybody wanting to find out what help is available to support them to quit for good and they will be offering free carbon monoxide readings, which detect how much of the poisonous gas is in a persons lungs.

Figures show you’re four times more likely to quit smoking for good if you use NHS stop smoking services and as soon as you stop your body will begin to repair the damage caused by cigarettes, so it’s never too late.

Barnsley specialist stop smoking service provides stop smoking support to individuals, groups and workplaces within the Barnsley area.

Recent figures show Barnsley has one of the worst track records in the UK for the number of people who smoke – with 20% of local deaths in the over 35 age group attributed to smoking. But it’s never too late to stop

The Barnsley specialist stop smoking service are trained in the latest evidence based stop smoking techniques and are on hand to help people stop smoking in the best way that suits them. They can provide information about what is available to help you stop smoking and can discuss the use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy and other medications that may be available.

Zoe added, "Stopping smoking is the one of the most effective ways of improving your health and free help is available. We hope No Smoking Day will give people the boost they need to stop smoking this year and encourage smokers to take the leap and give it a go, with the help of our local stop smoking advisers."

If you can’t make it to one of the roadshows local people are also invited to drop-in to the Quit Shop on Eldon Street in Barnsley town centre before or after No Smoking Day to set their quit day. The Quit Shop is open Monday, Thursday and Friday 9.30am- 4.30pm; Tuesday and Wednesday 9.30am- 7pm and Saturday 9.30am – 1pm.
