Get active and get involved in the spirit of the London 2012 Games

Date:

Local people in Barnsley are invited to get active and get involved in 2012 by taking part in a special week of activities organised by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust in support of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The week of activities, organised by the Physical Activity Development Team, will take place between Monday 4th June – Friday 9th June and will feature activities including athletics competitions, a cycling challenge and a football tournament. All events are free and open to everyone.

The team are part of the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which provides a range of community, mental health and learning disability services to the people of Barnsley.

Jane Baker, physical activity assistant with the team said, "We have organised a range of events in our efforts to bring the spirit of London 2012 to Barnsley, which we hope will give people the opportunity to try out something new and help us create a sporting legacy, as physical activity and social inclusion can make a big difference to a person’s physical and mental wellbeing.

"We chose to hold the activities during the Jubilee week to take advantage of the school holiday and national bank holidays to give children and families the opportunity to get involved together."

Representatives from health and wellbeing services at the Trust will also be on hand at the events to offer advice and information on topics such as stopping smoking and healthy lifestyles.
