Raising awareness of dementia by making Time for a Cuppa

Date:

South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is encouraging local people to get together with their family, friends and work colleagues to have some fun while raising awareness and funds for Time for a Cuppa and to show their support for Dementia UK.

Time for a Cuppa is an annual fundraising event organised by Dementia UK and this year is running from 1st – 8th March 2013. Events have been organised across the country that will give people the opportunity to get together and share a cuppa and some cake while raising funds and national awareness to support people affected by dementia.

Money raised during Time for a Cuppa is used by Dementia UK to support the provision of Admiral Nurses – who work with families and carers of all ages and backgrounds to support their needs as they look after someone with dementia.

South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, learning disability and community services throughout Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield.

The Trust also provides Admiral Nurses in Kirklees, thanks to a partnership with Dementia UK and Kirklees Council and they will be doing their bit during the week to support Time for a Cuppa.

The Admiral Nurses will be hosting their own celebration at Folly Hall Mills on Monday 4th March from 10am to 1pm, with information stalls and members of the team on hand to share details of the work the Admiral Nurses do and raise awareness of the initiative.

Michelle McGowan, Admiral Nurse at the Trust said, “An estimated one million people will be diagnosed with dementia in the next ten years, and many more people will be taking on the role of carer to help look after them. Events like Time for a Cuppa are great for raising awareness about dementia as well as the help that is currently available for people who have the condition or are caring for someone with it.

“I would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to support their local Time for a Cuppa event to do so or to consider hosting their own. It’s easy to do, just pick where and when you would like to host an event such as a tea party or bake sale and help us to raise awareness of this campaign.”
