Group of people standing in front of a projector screen.Barnsley Musculoskeletal (MSK) community service successfully held its first community appointment day on Thursday 4 September, offering patients on the MSK waiting list faster access to personalised and holistic care. This innovative event brought together clinical experts, community partners, and voluntary sector services to provide comprehensive support in a single session.

The event marked a shift from traditional consultations by focusing on ‘what matters to you?’ conversations between patients and MSK therapists. This approach addressed both immediate concerns and broader health needs. Patients received tailored home exercise programmes and self-management advice, with the option for further one to one assessments or follow up clinical appointments when necessary.

In addition to clinical care, patients connected with a variety of community partners, including Barnsley social prescribers, health and wellbeing coaches, podiatry, WorkWell, and community physiotherapy services that focus on falls prevention. This approach aimed to reduce waiting times and empower patients to take control of their health.

One patient shared, “It’s different and not what I was expecting in comparison to regular appointments. However, all the staff were incredibly helpful, and I feel I’ve finally got the help and support I need to manage my condition.” Another added, “I had a great experience, and it feels nice to finally be listened to.”

The community appointment day achieved significant outcomes, including reduced waiting times, increased patient self-management, and strong connections to wider community support. Out of those who attended 96% of patients rated their overall experience as very good or excellent.

Callum Emery, advanced physiotherapy practitioner at the Barnsley community musculoskeletal service, said: “This new approach allows us to provide more personalised care and support that goes beyond traditional treatments. By listening to patients and connecting them with community resources, we are helping them manage their conditions more effectively and improve their overall wellbeing.”
