Wakefield bowlers celebrate their achievements

Local people in Wakefield, who have been taking part in a Boccia league, celebrated their season and achievements at a special presentation event.

Boccia is a chair-based team bowling activity for all ages and abilities. The games help improve physical activity, health and wellbeing and intergenerational work brings people of all ages together in a social atmosphere.

The Wakefield District Boccia league was established over a year ago by the Trust’s health and wellbeing development team, in partnership with Age UK Wakefield district. Nine teams currently compete in the league, with games played on a weekly basis at local venues across the district.

At the presentation evening, the Beancroft Bullets from Castleford were crowned the winners of the league, with Margaret’s Bombers from Normanton coming a close second.

Daniel Eades, health and wellbeing development worker said, “Playing in the Boccia league is a great opportunity for older people to stay active into their later years, maintain their independence and develop or increase their social networks by getting out and about in the local community as they play teams from across the district.

“Boccia is an activity that everyone, no matter what their ability or age can get involved with and we would like to encourage more teams to sign up to take part in our next season, which will be starting in May 2013.”
