Celebrating Dietitians Week

Date:

From Monday 3 to Friday 7 June, the Trust celebrated Dietitians Week.Dietitians Week logo

This year’s theme, ‘From classroom to clinic and beyond’, offered the opportunity to explore and share the career routes and journeys of our dietetic staff.

Dietitians help to translate the science of nutrition into everyday information about food and advise people on their food and nutrition choices.

Throughout the week, our teams reflected on their career highlights, why they chose to work in dietetics, and the best things about working in their roles. Visit our Barnsley allied health professionals’ X page for posts from a range of our staff.

Our team of community dietitians in Barnsley have almost 209 years of combined clinical experience – ranging from 7 months to 32 years. Many team members started their training within the team and returned to the service once qualified.

A huge thank you to all our dietetics staff for the difference they make and for taking part in the week!

Read some stories from our staff:

“I’m absolutely loving my new role as a dietitian! I am grateful for the amazing support from my team and the trust placed in me as an independent healthcare professional. It's incredibly fulfilling to be valued by patients for the support I provide. Balancing a busy caseload definitely has its challenges; I'm embracing it and constantly striving to deepen my knowledge to better support complex cases”“I have been part of the team in Barnsley as a newly qualified community dietitian since October, applying to work here after completing one of my clinical placements here as a student. I enjoy my varied caseload, seeing patients in care homes, clinics, their own homes and the transition ward - every day is so different! I offer nutritional support advice to support patients at risk of malnutrition and other advice to help manage specific conditions. My skills and knowledge have improved since starting and I continue to learn every day. Being part of such a supportive team has really helped with my development.”“9 months ago I started my first job as a dietitian in a Tier 3 weight management role. I love being part of such a supportive and knowledgeable team to help me develop my practice. Adjusting to new responsibilities and daily stresses can be challenging, but this has been made much easier due to peer support from other newly qualified dietitians and insight from experienced dietitians. Working in a community service has allowed me to develop a more holistic approach, build rapport with patients and witness them progress while under my care. I am grateful for being invited into discussions around service development from starting in my role and have since created and delivered a new face to face education programme.”“I’m Rachel and 3 months ago I started a dietetic degree apprenticeship with Sheffield Hallam University while working as a dietetic assistant in the Barnsley community team. Having previously worked in the translation industry, I decided on a career change following the pandemic, as I wanted to help people and feel like I was making a difference, as well as to pursue my interest in nutrition and health. I started my first role in dietetics and the NHS in October 2021 as an assistant in Barnsley’s Tier 3 weight management service. I saw the dietetic apprenticeship as the ideal way to progress my career and develop my knowledge and skills. I am very grateful for this opportunity, as well as for the supportive team around me.”“Before my current position, I previously trained and worked as a chef for 10 years as I held a degree in food and nutrition, before going to work in the prison service for 12 years - training and encouraging behaviour change through purposeful activity. Throughout the years I have volunteered and helped those who need additional support in the community. My whole career has developed important skills required to work in the area of dietetics.”
